This phonemic awareness/literature project has been developed as a resource for teachers and classrooms from grades K-3. Knowing the importance for children to learn to read from meaningful contexts, yet acknowledging the growing body of research on phonemic awareness to each child's success in reading, this web site will provide literature sources to use for teaching phonemes, onsets, rimes, as well as traditional concepts like opposites and sequencing. Two teachers, Terry Starko from St. Albert, Alberta and Carol Vaage, from Sherwood Park, Alberta have joined together to create a resource for teachers who are looking for ideas to implement phonemic awareness, and other basic concepts like opposites, into their classrooms within a whole language context. We have given background information for teachers, as well as some current research of the critical importance of building phonemic awareness. Most importantly we have offered a place for contributions from teachers and classes all over the English speaking world to send us names of the books that you are reading or writing that have special attention to specific onsets or rimes. We want all children to learn from being in the "wonderful world of story". If you have suggestions to add to our blossoming collection, please email them to the webmaster. We will type them in the appropriate section, and give you credit for making suggestions! You will see your/class name on the Web! |
